How to make this Vegan Tiramisu

Traditional tiramisu uses mascarpone cheese or cream cheese. To make our vegan tiramisu, we’ve used soft almond dessert tofu. This popular Asian dish is made from almond milk, agar-agar, and sugar. Traditional almond tofu is vegan, but there are variations that use gelatin. It’s best to check the ingredients to be sure that you’re using the agar-based almond tofu.

Here are a few tips to help you make this recipe:

Plan ahead this vegan tiramisu needs to be refrigerated overnight

This tiramisu tastes the best once it’s had time for the flavors to marry. If you are planning to serve it for dessert after dinner, you could make it first thing in the morning and leave it in the refrigerator for the day. Alternatively, make it the day before.

Use a spatula to break up the almond tofu and mix until smooth

At first, the almond tofu might not look like it’s going to become smooth. Keep mixing it with the sugar until you get a smooth cheese-like consistency.

Layer the ladyfingers and almond tofu mix until finished

Start with a layer of ladyfingers and sprinkle the coffee on top (be careful not to sprinkle too much otherwise the ladyfingers will be soggy). They spread a layer of the almond tofu mix and cover with ladyfingers. Make sure that the last layer is almond tofu.

Sprinkle the cocoa over the top layer of almond tofu mix

For the final touch, sprinkle the cocoa quite liberally over the top layer. As the tiramisu refrigerates, it will soak into the almond tofu.
